My parents were never very good at that whole compromising thing that you’re supposed to do when you’re married to someone. They each kind of did their own thing. That’s why I was surprised when my dad took us to go visit his brother one year. His brother and his brother’s wife were newly married and they were talking about needing to book a car rental on vacation they were about to take.

At one point, my new aunt explained that their frequent travel plans were part of a deal that the two of them had made before getting married. She had said that they needed to plan vacations to go to at least once each year because it was her dream to travel all around the world. For her part, she had agreed that my uncle should save up and purchase the Harley that he had always wanted.

This was the first time that I really came across the idea that two people in a relationship together should assist each other in realizing their dreams. I just figured that it was enough to let one another do what they needed to do to not infringe on those dreams. But this was when I realized that you can work together to make dreams come true. It’s a romantic notion that I continue to hold to this day.
