Skiing With Kids for the First Time

My best friend and I both gave birth to children three weeks apart back in 2004 and between us; we have five children under the age of nine. This January, we loaded up the minivan with all of the kids and headed to the local ski resort to introduce the kids to skiing. None of the children had ever been; it had been over 15 years that either of us had braved the slopes of a ski resort.

Packing the van and riding to the ski lodge alone qualified as a sport. The kids, excited about the upcoming adventure, made the ride exhausting. Stopping along the way to eat, go to the bathroom (several times), to break up fights, to find gloves left behind, to make sure we didn’t lose a child and to ask for directions made for one long trip. Decked out in their childrens ski clothes, we began with a lesson at the bunny slopes. My friend’s 9 year old son tried his luck with snowboarding, the other kids watching in wonder as he went down the slope for the first time. Youth snowboard jackets kept all of the kids warm and dry on the particularly windy day. The kids snowboard jackets were colorful so we never lost track of them as they whizzed around the ski resort.

Admittedly, a great time was had by all. My friend and I enjoyed a day that made us feel like teenagers again, road tripping with our little ones.
